Pandit Motiram & Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroha
In memory of his father and elder brother, since last 40 years Pandit Jasraj organizes a music festival every year in Hyderabad, called the Pandit Motiram & Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroha. The festival has provided a stage to some of the finest exponents of Indian Classical music who perform at his invitation. Pandit Jasraj, himself, always performs on the 30th of November, the date of his father’s death anniversary. Originally the festival was named solely after Pandit Jasraj’s father, Pandit Motiram. But after his elder brother died in 1986, Pandit Jasraj changed the name of the festival to include his name as well.

The festival was started in 1972. Pandit Jasraj specifically chose Hyderabad because it was here that he spent most of his childhood. Not to mention the fact that it is also the location of his father’s Samadhi. Maharaja Kishan Prasad Bahadur took Pandit Motiram to Chowmallah Palace, where he was to be announced as the Royal Musician in the Court of Osman Ali Khan. However, Pandit Motiram died five hours before his concert and announcement, in 1934.

It is only fitting that the festival provides the people of Hyderabad with the same musical excellence that Pandit Jasraj’s father and brother were known for. In fact, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Zakir Hussain were introduced to Hyderabad audiences in the inaugural festival of 1972. Since then, the festival has been held at various venues across the city like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, CIEFL, Nizam College and, since 2009 at Chowmallah Palace.
